What is the Value ?

By looking at the image in grayscale it's easier to see the value of a color. This is a good way to get around the way our brain will sometimes me fooled by color. Value In painting refers to how light or dark  color is. Looking at the info graphic below do you see any color values that are surprising to you. Do you see a color whose value is darker or lighter than you expected it to be. Also this demonstrates the power of color.

You may also be noticing how directionality is playing a part in this painting. The gesture of the brushstrokes help suggest the form and movement of the plant and the structure of the vase. This allows us to paint our subject in a much more loose manner. We are not painting Yes we are suggesting a vase. We are not painting a flower we are suggesting the shape gesture and value of the flower. Sometimes loose expressive painting allows us to create a lot of movement and energy in what would otherwise be a very static and boring subject.

Finally our use of color in this expressive piece is very exciting. We begin this with an acrylic ground that is  red. This allows us to create a cool turquoise blue background with pops of surprising color peeking through. It also allows us to create a focus of that same exciting color with in the flowers.

Why do we begin with the red background in this type of painting? We begin with the with red background because it is the complement of the majority of color we put on top of it. This creates a glow of fact as the color shows through by either transparency Or loose expressive painting.
