When you're looking at mixing colors with primaries, try to remember little changes can have a big impact. Adding the tiniest amount of magenta to your yellow can make it much warmer and brighter. Adding a small amount of white to your magenta can make it much pinker. Primary colors are red yellow and blue. Secondary colors are green purple and orange. You lighten or "Tint" a color using white. You " Shade"  or darken the color using black.  In this set Magenta is the red. All of the colors can be a little bit transparent because they're modern colors. You may ask yourself, "what if I don't have the exact color I see her painting with?" My answer to you would be don't worry, use what you have. You get a  slightly different result than I do, but you will essentially get the same painting. I include the colors that I use so you can know exactly what is happening. The worksheet above is created to give you a quick reminder about how we get Turquoise using the Phthalo blue  Phthalo green.  Also how we get Gradients for the sky and the Mountain

Mt fuji Box brush strokes .jpg

The Direction of Things

The direction of your brush stroke can help create the illusion of form in the painting. Notice how the opposing curvatures of the mountain brushstroke help enforce the feeling of the curvature. If you think about it it's really kind of fun. In the sky using very level horizontal brush strokes, went into wet blending, and gradients created by adding white is how we get this clear sky. Finally the delicate dabbing brushstrokes of the cherry blossoms curve to imply wind and movement in the trees. We even open up the brushstroke creating delicate little dabs blending up into the right to show a gust of wind caring away these blossoms

How can I know if my painting is Good ??

Being successful in a painting is not just achieving every technique. More often than not being successful in a painting is seeing your achievements more predominately then you're perceived failures. I can tell students repeatedly that there is not a failure in art but at the end of the day it's about our perception of ourselves. It's never about creating arbitrary expectations about what needs to happen for us to perceive ourselves as successful. I would like to suggest to you to suspend any beliefs you have about what make your art good or bad. Instead replace this thinking with what was enjoyable for you while  doing the painting. Put your focus into what is making art fun. At the end of the day the way we improve in art is to make more art. By criticizing yourself you're not helping your inner artist improve you're just making it less likely you will paint again. Be easy with yourself improve as you naturally should in a organic process of growth .
