How do you check a 3D artist’s technical skills when hiring through a platform?
I’ve had a couple of great-looking portfolios come across my desk lately, but I’m always a bit unsure about the technical side—like scene optimization, UV work, clean topology, etc. Once I hired someone whose art looked amazing but the file was a nightmare in-engine. Any tips on how to test for this stuff beforehand when you're hiring online?
In my experience, most problems come up not because artists lack talent, but because expectations weren’t aligned. Having super clear requirements up front—like polycount limits or naming conventions—helps a ton, no matter who you’re working with.
Totally get that. I usually ask for a quick test task—nothing too big, like building a small modular piece or exporting to my engine setup. It shows a lot. Also, when I need someone fast and reliable, I go through https://devotedfusion.com/hire/3d-environment/ because they tend to vet their artists pretty well. Saves me from having to micromanage that part.
