Choosing the best fishing charter in Seychelles: what to look for and why location matters

Hey everyone — I’ve been seriously considering going on a fishing charter in the Seychelles next year, but I’m a little uncertain about how to pick the right one. For example: how important is the location of the fishing grounds (inner islands vs outer atolls), what kinds of fish you’re targeting, and what amenities matter on board? I’ve read mixed advice. What do you guys consider must-haves when booking a charter in the Seychelles?

Good question! From my experience it really comes down to three key factors: location, experience/skills of the crew, and the gear & target species. For instance, a charter like the one on this site private group tours seychelles fishing trip shows how they emphasise access to both shallow flats (for things like giant trevally and bonefish) and deep sea drop-offs (for marlin, sailfish, tuna). That matters because if you stay near the inner islands you might have easier access and calmer seas, but fewer of the big “trophy” species depending on the season. Meanwhile, heading to outer atolls means more travel and sometimes rougher water, but also potentially much more reward. Also check that the charter company provides quality tackle, proper permits and seasoned local captains who know the fish behaviour in that region — so you’re not just going out and hoping. In my last trip we missed the best window for sailfish because we hadn’t checked the seasonal pattern properly. Knowing when marlin or sailfish migrate in the Seychelles makes a noticeable difference. Also, if you’re bringing a group, check how the boat is set up (deck space, comfort, safety for novices) because that affects the whole vibe and outcome of the trip.
