Preparing HVAC before the storm season

Hello everyone, after what happened last year when a hurricane hit our town, I’ve been more cautious about protecting my home systems. Back then, the power went out for days, and my HVAC unit took a serious beating from debris and flooding. It cost a lot to repair and I don’t want to repeat that mistake. Recently, I stumbled upon this link: https://www.technology.org/2025/08/21/storm-proofing-your-hvac-system/, which talks about storm-proofing HVAC systems. Has anyone here tried applying these methods in practice? I’d love to know which ones are most effective and whether they’re worth the investment.

Reading this discussion made me think more seriously about my own situation. My neighborhood has seen more frequent storms lately, and while I never thought about the HVAC system being so vulnerable, it now seems obvious. Thanks for bringing this up, I’ll be looking into these solutions as well.

Hi there, that’s a very relevant concern, especially with how unpredictable the weather has become. From my experience and research, storm-proofing involves more than just covering the outdoor unit. You need to secure it to a stable base, ensure proper drainage around it, and even consider a protective cage to block flying debris. Elevating the unit in flood-prone areas is also crucial. That article you found does a solid job of explaining step-by-step approaches and practical upgrades, so following it could save you both stress and money in the long run.
