I saw something about the band Old Crow Medicine Show, and the idea of painting an old, bald crow wearing big "old man" glasses came to mind. I sketched the idea for the grumpy one on the right, and decided he needed a friend. No one had better "old man" glasses than Harry Carey, so he was the inspiration for the one on the left.
Anyway, this was a very limited palette of dioxazine purple, yellow iron oxide, burnt sienna, and titanium white.
