Gun Safety:

Responsible gun ownership and storage are critical for preventing accidents and impulsive decisions during crises:

  • Store guns unloaded and locked in a gun safe or cabinet.
  • Use trigger locks or cable locks to add an extra layer of security.
  • Store ammunition separately in a locked location.
  • Regularly educate all household members about gun safety and the importance of not handling firearms without supervision or knowledge.
  • Consider temporarily removing firearms from the home during high-risk periods for anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts or emotional crises.

Local Resources:

Maintain a list of local emergency resources, such as hospitals, shelters, and community mental health services, to ensure quick access during crises.

A Personal Crisis Plan

shutterstock_2296771767.jpg

Creating a personal crisis plan involves preparing for potential mental health crises by identifying warning signs, coping strategies, and local resources that can provide assistance. Here's a step-by-step guide to developing your own personal crisis plan with the help of local resources:

Step 1: Recognize Your Warning Signs

  • Self-awareness: Identify early warning signs that suggest a crisis might be developing. These could be changes in thoughts, feelings, or behaviors, such as increased anxiety, mood swings, or withdrawal from social activities.
  • Document Signs: Keep a journal or list of these signs to help recognize when you might need to implement your crisis plan.

Step 2: Develop Coping Strategies

  • Personal Coping Mechanisms: List the strategies that have helped you in the past during stressful times, such as deep breathing exercises, going for a walk, listening to music, or talking to a friend.
  • Professional Techniques: If you've learned specific techniques from therapists or counselors, like mindfulness or grounding exercises, include these as well.

Step 3: Identify Your Support System

  • Personal Contacts: Include contact information for friends, family members, or mentors who can provide support during a crisis.
  • Professional Contacts: List contact details for your therapist, psychiatrist, or any other healthcare professionals involved in your care.

Step 4: Research Local Resources

  • Social Services: Contact local social services for information on mental health support, including counseling services, support groups, or crisis intervention teams.
  • Healthcare Facilities: Identify nearby hospitals or clinics that offer mental health services and note their emergency and non-emergency contact numbers.
  • Community Resources: Look for local non-profits or community centers that provide mental health resources or workshops.

Step 5: Document Emergency Contacts

  • Crisis Hotlines: Include national and local crisis hotline numbers, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK) or a local crisis center's hotline.
  • Emergency Services: Have the number for emergency services (911 in the U.S.) readily available for situations that require immediate medical attention.

Step 6: Outline a Communication Plan

  • Information Sharing: Decide in advance what information you're comfortable sharing about your mental health with friends, family, and healthcare providers during a crisis.
  • Consent Forms: Consider completing consent forms that allow healthcare providers to communicate with designated friends or family members about your care.

Step 7: Make Your Plan Accessible

  • Keep Copies Handy: Have copies of your crisis plan in easily accessible places, such as in your wallet, on your phone, and with a trusted friend or family member.
  • Digital Copies: Store a digital version of your plan in a place that can be accessed quickly, like in an email or cloud storage.

Step 8: Review and Update Regularly

  • Periodic Reviews: Revisit your crisis plan regularly to update it based on new insights, coping strategies, or changes in your support network.
  • Post-Crisis Reflection: After a crisis, review your plan to assess what worked well and what could be improved.

Creating a personal crisis plan is a proactive step in managing your mental health. It's important to remember that this plan is a living document that can and should be adjusted as your needs and circumstances change. Involving your healthcare provider in the planning process can also provide valuable insights and suggestions.

Conclusion:

This crisis plan is a testament to our community's commitment to supporting each other during challenging times. Utilizing these resources and following safety precautions can pave the way for healing and recovery. Remember, you are not alone, and there is always help available.

IS THIS REALLY FOR BEGINNERS ?
I often get asked if my classes are suitable for beginners. The answer is yes – all my classes cater to beginners, but it's important to recognize that beginners come in various stages. There are beginners who haven't painted in years or have never painted before, those ready for some color mixing and technique challenges, and those eager to tackle more advanced work while still needing guidance. Each of these types falls under the "beginner" umbrella.
When you attend a demo that doesn't provide step-by-step instruction and instead focuses on the artist's process, thought, and design without breaking it down into smaller parts, you're no longer a beginner. For instance, I can watch a time-lapse video of a painting and understand exactly how the artist created it without needing the steps. However, if you still require in-depth, thoroughly explained instruction for every color mix and brushstroke, you're a beginner – and that's perfectly fine! Beginners are AWESOME!!
The key is to understand what kind of beginner you are. That's why I use the one, two, and three "hoot" scale to indicate a project's complexity. One hoot suits those who haven't painted before or in a long time, while two hoots cater to those ready for more acrylic technique challenges but who may not have a full range of colors, tools, or stamina for lengthy classes.
This particular class is designed for confident beginners and will be broken down into steps, with each step explained in depth. I will demonstrate every part live, and a traceable will be provided. However, expect the class to take me a couple of hours, which could translate to two or three times longer for the student.
To determine if you're ready for a class, consider the following questions: How confident are you with color mixing? Can you effortlessly transition between dry brushing and blending with acrylics? Do you own an array of brushes, canvases, and paints? Are you painting a couple of times a month, maybe even once a week? Can you sit comfortably for extended periods? (Note that some health issues may prevent people from sitting for long periods, even if their skill set is more than adequate.)
If many of these concepts seem overwhelming or you're still struggling with them, you're likely in the one or two hoot stage. If you're mixing colors easily, can perform basic acrylic techniques without difficulty, but still need considerable direction, you're ready for a three hoot paintin g

Materials for Acrylic April

JohnCooney_funny_Cartoon_style_plus_size_whimsical_middle_aged__c09f6abb89a94e3da86c743f11fdfac2.png

During this year's Acrylic April, I used a more diverse range of brushes compared to previous years. Part of the reason for this was due to my travels, which meant I had to work with the brushes I had on hand. As a result, you may notice that I used different brands of brushes that serve similar purposes.

To help you plan and organize your own brush collection, I have created two lists: a complete list and a simplified shopping list. The complete list includes every single tool I used, while the simplified list contains a more streamlined selection of essential brushes and tools.

You don't necessarily need to own every brush I've used, even though each one is of high quality and comes highly recommended. Instead, use the complete list as a guide to help you build a personalized, simplified brush plan, or to help you identify brushes you already own that can serve similar purposes.

By referring to both the complete and simplified lists, you can make informed decisions about which brushes to purchase or use, ensuring that you have the tools you need without feeling overwhelmed by an extensive collection.

Happy painting!

Welcome to the wonderful world of watercolor. I'm so excited that you might be interested in taking up this medium with me. Just like I love teaching acrylic to beginners, I enjoy introducing beginner's to the Wonder and Magic that is watercolor.

Watercolor  weekly evening class that's fully step by step to introduce new artists to the joys of watercolor. It's just like our livestream acrylic class on YouTube, but with Watercolor.  Classes are level friendly, fully step by step to introduce new artist to the joys of watercolor. Watercolor is one of my favorite mediums. I just love it.

Dont Worry I have an Exchange for our Pigmented colors so you can easily swap back and forth. Just use the correct color from either your pigment paint or the sheets on any of the lessons!!

watercolor-worksheets-2021-gallery-image.jpg

The watercolor classes I offer are designed so that you can follow along using exactly what I'm using or what you already have. In terms of color mixing, watercolor is more forgiving than acrylic paint. I find that most people are comfortable with slight differences in color in their paintings. We're all unique, so I'll explain exactly what I'm using every time. I am introducing my line and wash watercolor kits for 2023. They are designed to work with older classes, and there is a cheat sheet for color exchanges so you can go back and forth easily.

When you have time, I recommend watching a couple of classes. My Instagram videos contain some watercolor classes that are unique. They are much older. While I have watercolors on my acrylic channel, I have been focusing on the watercolor channel in the last couple of years. There are sometimes hidden gems on Facebook as well. It's okay, most of the classes you'll want to watch are on the watercolor YouTube channel. This is just to let you know where you might find a cookie or a surprise. Our website also offer a search of my  watercolor lessons.

Where do I get the Line and Wash designs

#1 You buy our prints on 140lb paper from the Store

#2 Free you can print your own on your own watercolor paper from the Traceables tab!! I love ya either way

Paper

9x12 140lb 300 GSM Watercolor Paper Cold press in a Block pad

What is a watercolor block?

A watercolor block is a pad of watercolor paper that’s bound on all sides with a coating of a rubber like material called padding compound.. You paint on the top sheet of paper and then remove it after it fully dries flat. To separate the painting from the block, insert a dull palette knife into the gap in the binding and run it around all four edges. A watercolor block helps prevent the warping of the paper when it is wet.

images.jpg

If you have a regular pad of paper you can tape all of edges of the sheet to the table with low take tape and then carefully peel them after the sheep its dry.

Its Free

Is it hard ?

Like everything, it can be a little challenging in the beginning to learn how to do something new. However, watercolor is a very beginner friendly medium  and I find people can pick it up as quickly as they did acrylic, sometimes even easier.

Can I use Acrylics ?

You can use acrylics watered down to get some similar effects to watercolor. The paper is a good binder and prevents issues with watering down that you might normally see on canvas. There are a few differences. It's very easy to lift or reactivate watercolor.  Once acrylic is dry it's permanent.  Watercolor is very transparent and acrylic can be much more opaque.  Some techniques are different.  You can paint acrylic over watercolor. You can't paint watercolor over acrylic. I don't recommend using acrylic on fine watercolor brushes as it can build up in the ferrule and shorten the life of a brush.  Watercolor will not harm acrylic brushes in any way and you can use what you have until you're ready to buy special brushes just for watercolor.

Do I need to have your exact materials?

If you purchased one of the watercolor sets that we had in our store during the initial lockdown. you may wonder what colors exchange well for the new 2021 art palette. You may also wonder if there's a difference between the tube watercolor and the half pan watercolor. In this blog I'm going to let you know what colors in your palette to use when I'm using the 2021 colors. I'm going to give you some resources to match the colors you have to the colors I'm using and just in general make your watercolor experience easier.

Acrylic April 2022 Calender 2022 .jpg

April is coming !! Welcome to Acrylic April, a yearly 30 day painting challenge started by The Art Sherpa. The goal of Acrylic April is to help all artists of any skill level transform their painting experience in just 30 days. The challenge can be completed in two ways.

Word Prompts - Released March 25th

Video classes - Begin April 1 @ 1pm EST on youtube  https://www.youtube.com/theartsherpa

How to participate for 2022

Gather materials , come to the video class and share the Art.

Acrylic April Painting Challenge begins April 1st 2022- no joke

IMG_4089.JPG

30 Days, 30 Powerful Little Paintings

We hope that Every April, artists from all over the world take on the all Acrylic, all April painting challenge by doing one small acrylic painting every day for the entire month.

I am creating the #AcrylicApril challenge as a way to introduce painters to the gifts of daily painting with Acrylic. This monthly challenge will help every acrylic artist unlock the true potential of the acrylic medium and their own art voice.

Anyone can do Acrylic April,

Just grab your paint, your brush and hit the studio (even if it’s your kitchen table).

#AcrylicApril rules:

1) Make a painting on a surface 12x12 or smaller. ( sorry for the confusion)

My live classes use an 8x8

2) Share it online

3) Hashtag it with #AcrylicArpril #AcrylicApril2022

#AcrylicAprilItsNoJoke   #TheArtSherpa   and be sure to add the day of the challenge, or word prompt, etc

4) Repeat Daily from April 1 ( no fooling) to April 30th

How to do the Challenge:

Do your best to paint daily. Some Days may be artwork you are excited about, some days you may scribble out an abstract, but under no circumstances should your be hard on yourself. If you make 30 little paintings you are a winner. If you make less than 30 you are a winner. Do your best, paint anything you want using the prompts and/or the daily tutorials with The Art Sherpa

Wait there are daily tutorials not just prompts ?? THAT'S right!!!

This is an Art Sherpa painting challenge so it’s extra awesome.. This challenge comes with a daily live video lesson you can follow along with. So you can use the prompts, follow the lesson, or do your own thing. Either way you are going to succeed. This is going to change your art world.

I will be teaching my lessons on an 8x8 art panel.

That's it! Now go make something beautiful.

Anyone, from Anywhere in the world, no matter who you are or how much painting experience you have can Join in.

You are invited to paint along!!

How much does it cost?  -

IT'S FREE

( so you can buy more art supplies )

Watercolor Classes what you need to know

By TheArtSherpa, 2021-11-20

belle in watercolor copy.jpg

Welcome to the wonderful world of watercolor. I'm so excited that you might be interested in taking up this medium with me. Just like I love teaching acrylic to beginners, I enjoy introducing beginner's to the Wonder and Magic that is watercolor.

115886623_10223091123212315_9053708700724300581_o.jpg

Watercolor  weekly evening class that's fully step by step to introduce new artists to the joys of watercolor. It's just like our livestream acrylic class on YouTube, but with Watercolor.  Classes are level friendly, fully step by step to introduce new artist to the joys of watercolor. Watercolor is one of my favorite mediums. I just love it.

What materials do you need ?

We have a new kit for 2023 !

Viviviaset1a.jpeg

Watercolor kit Swatches .jpg Sprout.JPG

How to use the NEW line and Wash Watercolor kits

The following is your material list for Watercolor Wednesday.  Not all colors will be used for every class. Not all materials will be used every class. I do expect to use all colors and all of these materials during the 2021 class year.

How much Does it cost ?

You can use what you have. If you have Crayola watercolors, start with those. I will talk about how to guess a close approximate color on the palette you have so you can paint along and still get a good result

Winners List for Giveaways

By TheArtSherpa, 2021-09-14
patron painting cat studio .jpg pins .jpg l moon patron final small .jpg

In an effort to make sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to claim prizes and giveaways on The Art Sherpa Tutorials, we are creating this list, which we will keep updated.  Once the list has been provided to the community on either the theartsherpa.com Blog or via email to our community list, winners will have 10 days  to claim their prize.

Prints and physical giveaways that must be mailed are mailed at no cost to the winner if the winner lives in the contiguous United States.  If you are an international winner, you will be given an option to pay the difference or forfeit the prize.  We will honor those tutorials where we said we would ship up to and including a $35 postage fee, but after those prizes are claimed or rewarded to other persons, we will no longer make that offer. This only because shipping costs have skyrocketed.

If you see your name on this list, and you wish to claim your prize, you MUST create a help ticket be sending an email to support@theartsherpa.com and with the subject line of "I WON A PRIZE".  Your email must include your name, complete mailing address, zip code, and your email if you want to be provided with a tracking number when it is mailed.

You have one week, 7 days, to claim your prize after this notice is provided to the community or on the blog.

(Insert other notices here via tables and this will move down but not be erased)

How to Paint Acrylic April by The Art Sherpa
“Acrylic April is HERE”

March 31, 2021

This is our third year of daily painting because nothing transforms an artist more than daily painting.  Now, I teach 30 days, but for you, you make the program work for you.  I do not have an Acrylic April Officer who will show up at your house if you miss one.

My husband is John, aka Stunt Hands, and, yes, he will be in all the lives and he will heckle me and he will speak.  That is his job; he is non negotiable.  We created the two person format and we talk a lot.  I use my ipad because I need assets and resources from time to time; you won’t have my passwords.

This year has a theme:   A Story of Water, a New Beginning.

How do you find AA?

Facebook - did you join the Acrylic April Challenge Group; come find us, we are a cool group.  Facebook is not just for chatting and making friends, at least not in the Art Sherpa World.  There are resources.  Look at the top, you see “About, Discussion, Announcements, Rooms, Topics, Members, Events, Media and Files”.  Have you ever clicked off of “discussion” before?  Announcements are my posts that have information that you will care about.  There is one for every day in Acrylic April that we have done so far.  The first post is a calendar of what we are doing every day.  If you click the “see more”, there are links for traceables, the mini books, files, everything that you need.

  • Events show all the pre-shows, just click them.  Albums are each day’s resources reference grid worksheet traceable and word prompts for the month.
  • Files are another important thing.  The mini book is there with color mixing legend and the brushes and even a description of each individual step.  There are pictures that accompany every single step in the book.  You don’t even have to print it out.
  • Look in the Pre-Show File for that day.  TONS OF STUFF!!!

  • The most important post is the sunflower picture that says “TRUST THE PROCESS, ENJOY THE JOURNEY”. You probably feel overwhelmed and do not know what to expect.  Read the posts from people who have done this before.

  • Make The Color Chart

The Art Sherpa website is www.theartsherpa.com .

  • Traceables Tab on the front page will take you to all my traceables.
  • Look in the Acrylic April Tab for all my previous challenges.
  • Go to the Calendar and select April, there are this year’s paintings.  Click one to go to it’s event page which has everything on it.
  • If you go back to April 2019, it will take you to that program and you can go directly to the painting you want from previous years.

  • Patron - Ignore more of what’s up there now.  We are transitioning to a new website and right now, the Patrons are getting to preview and prepaint Acrylic April videos and see mini books and get naming rights to my tutorials.  If you sign up for even the $5.00 level, you are going to get most of what you need.  We will be changing the Patron Program when we go to the new website so there is just one level of Patron; much easier.
  • Big Art Quest will take you to our new website if you’d like to start looking at it.
  • If you are interested in being a volunteer for The Art Sherpa, or if you have any kind of a question about our program or our products, send an email to support@theartsherpa.com and we will respond.
  • LABs is our licensing and business support program where teaching artists subscribe in order to have permission to use The Art Sherpa developed intellectual property in their business (like teaching at a “paint and sip” party).

The basics broken down:

  • Go to Facebook and ask to join the Acrylic April Challenge.
  • Show up on April 1 at 11 am EST on YouTube to paint Acrylic April Day 1.  Show up subsequent days at the same time to paint other days.
  • Show up on April 1 at 4 pm EST on Facebook to attend the preshow for Acrylic April Day 2.  If you don’t want to attend, visit either the website or the Facebook group to get your mini book if you want to review the tutorial in advance and be prepared.
  • Post your paintings in the Acrylic April Challenge group.
  • Watercolor Wednesdays will be on YouTube, on the new channel, “How To Paint Watercolor Live with The Art Sherpa”, at 1 pm EST on Wednesday during April.
